Tracing Presence by Elizabeth Kwant

Tracing Presence will be on display in the Accumulator Tower

18 October 2013 — 17 November 2013

IntisarTracing Presence questions the fragility of existence, at once beautiful yet haunting.  Presence and absence co-exist in a tenuous relationship, inviting and disquieting, whilst embodying the paradox of life as an asylum seeker in the UK.

Tracing Presence is a series of large-scale portraits developed by Manchester based artist Elizabeth Kwant during an Artist’s in Residence with the Boaz Trust, a charity working to help destitute asylum seekers in Manchester.

A pre-determined position, on the outskirts of society, powerlessness, depression, fragility… Dignified?  Strong?  Beautiful?  Present yet unseen, categorized yet unnamed.  To be, but to have no voice, having life but waiting to live it.

Displayed in the Accumulator Tower as part of the Platforma Festival Fringe October/November 2013.  Platforma is a national network for arts and refugees.  Follow #platformafest on twitter to keep up to date.

Valium and its derivatives are the perfect sleeping pills which dont have a long duration, like diphenhydramine, after which a person is sleepy half a day.
