Stirred Poetry is a feminist collective.  Founders Anna Percy and Rebecca Audra Smith will lead a discussion and creative writing workshop on the topic of women’s rights.  What has Wonder Women Radical Manchesterchanged since Mary Wollstonecraft wrote: ‘if women are slaves…not allowed to breathe the sharp invigorating air of freedom, they must always languish like exotics, and be regarded as beautiful flaws.’

Does society still see women as beautiful flaws?  You will respond to Mary Wollstoncraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Woman using different techniques, with a group piece that looks at the needs of today and our inheritance of the past.  In today’s climate, when we are told that we won’t see equal pay for women until 2067, this conversation is still crucial.

Stirred Poetry aims to create a platform for women to speak from, and on this topic we want our voices to be heard.  The creative writing workshop will begin by Mary Wollstonecraft’s portrait on Main Gallery One, where you will look at ekphrastic writing (writing inspired by works of art), and then move into structured and free writing.  We will close by returning to the portrait and documenting our group piece.

Part of a series of events exploring feminism as part of the Research in Residence Programme at the University of Manchester and part of Wonder Women Radical Manchester.
