16 September 2017 - 13 May 2018, Savage Ink @ People's History Museum. Universal Suffrage or the Scum Uppermost, hand coloured engraving by George Cruikshank, 1819This exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the history of the satirical cartoon, from its pioneers in the late 18th century right through to those artists working in graphic novels, comic books and newspapers today.

The exhibition looks at the development of the cartoon as an important form of visual protest, reflecting on the historical importance of the art form and how it has documented some of the key moments in the long fight for representation and suffrage.

Rare historic cartoons from PHM’s extensive collection including works by William Hogarth, James Gillray, Steve Bell and Peter Fluck are displayed together with some of museum’s most recent acquisitions, many on display for the first time, alongside the work of some of the most exciting contemporary female cartoonists including Kate Evans, Lorna Miller and Marjane Satrapi.
