12 January 2017, Radicals Assemble! DEMAND Utopia! @ People's History MuseumDEMAND Utopia! presents readings by the Institute of Urban Dreaming (IUD) and guests, a pop up exhibition and screenings.  DEMAND Utopia! also sees the launch of All Materials of Value an IUD publication featuring responses by artists, academics and tenants to walking in a Salford housing estate, along with broader issues to do with the commodification of housing.

Nicholas Mansfield will present a talk entitled ‘Owenites, Chartists to Clarion Socialists and their educational spaces’ which provides some historical context for IUD’s temporary research space, an interactive environment for sharing and learning, launched at the People’s History Museum in October 2016.

DEMAND Utopia!  Although Utopia never existed, the idea has been used throughout history by radicals and visionaries as a tool to critique the existing order.  We would argue that Utopian thinking is a means to understand what is happening now and to develop discussions about what we wish for our futures.

Violence, mass displacements, homelessness and poverty are all around us, whilst the perpetrators appear to be inscrutable structures and systems that oppress and destroy regardless of our hopes, dreams and even lives!  DEMAND Utopia! reminds us that we are still free to think the unthinkable!  We must claim a space to live well and dream.  We want homes rather than housing; people before profit!  DEMAND Utopia is a call to STOP accepting the way things are!  START DEMANDING!

Above all your participation is required so join us to celebrate the final days of the Promising Home exhibition and liberate your inner Utopian! Heritage Lottery Fund & Arts Council England
