Queer Beyond London is a collaboration between Birkbeck College, University of London and Leeds Beckett University to research histories of LGBT+ identities and communities in Manchester, Leeds, Plymouth and Brighton from the 1960s to the present. Come and share your experiences of themes including family and kinship, migration and movement, activism and community building, and the uses of history.
Queer Beyond London is the first comparative project to research the impact of locality on queer histories and experiences outside the capital. It considers the local significance of famous LGBT+ landmarks, community networks, migration, gentrification and the intersection of sexual, religious, ethnic, class and gender identities and identifications. It will also gather new interviews relating to the impact of these issues on local LGBT+ communities.
Part of our Never Going Underground season, a year long programme of exhibitions, events and learning programmes exploring the past, present and future of LGBT+ activism.
Suitable for adults and young people, welcoming a mix of people across a range of ages, genders and sexual identities, ethnic and religious backgrounds interested in Manchester’s LGBT+ past
Sent out approximately every two months.
