Mirth in the Mill

Lancashire cotton industry cartoons

14 January 2012 — 4 March 2012

Mirth in the Mill cartoon

Cartoons to make you laugh?  When Cotton was King, Sam Fitton’s weekly cartoons in the union newspaper Cotton Factory Times, provided a wry and unique commentary on the workplace struggles and everyday lives of the men, women and children who worked in its mills.  Co-ordinated by Terry Wyke and Alan Fowler, historians at Manchester Metropolitan University, the exhibition features cartoons of the Lancashire cotton industry in the early 20th century, drawn by Sam Fitton, a former cotton operative.

Thanks to the Pasold Fund for supporting this exhibition.

The Community Gallery space is where local groups can display their own work.  We try to make these displays relevant to the story told in the museum where possible.  If you are interested in exhibiting, contact exhibitions@phm.org.uk
