24 September 2016, Democracy Outside. Image © S DhallWhose streets?  Our streets!  Join us as we take over a corner of Manchester and play politics!  Democracy Outside is an inclusive, interactive public performance about democracy: part The LRMstreet theatre and part political action, it blurs the boundaries between ‘art’ and ‘activism’.  It will move you (if you’re doing it right) – and it’s fun!  Come prepared to play.

Clare Bonetree developed Democracy Outside after suppressing her creativity for years in order to ‘be an activist’.  She found that as much as she needed her creative work to engage with the wider world, she also needed her activism to be meaningful, creative, alive.  We can all be artists in that we can all imagine, and shape, a better world – together.

Clare says: ‘Democracy Outside is a response to my own concern about the increasing privatisation of, and exclusion of different kinds of people from, public space, which itself grew in part out of my lived experience as a disabled, female campaigner.  I developed Democracy Outside as an embodied opportunity to experience and realise our right to take up space in public.’Arts Council England

Clare will be working with local disabled people’s groups to decide which questions to address and to make sure the performance is as accessible and interesting as possible.
