Conference: New Dawn? The 1997 general election

A public conference discussing the causes and consequences of the 1997 general election

3 June 2017

25 March - 4 June 2017, New Dawn? @ People's History Museum

Time 11:00 - 16:30

Duration 5 hours 30 minutes

Unfortunately this event has been cancelled due to the 2017 general election.  Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

The general election held on 1 May 1997 was a unique moment in British history.  Though it was two decades ago, 1997 remains a live and controversial subject, the consequences of which continue to shape Britain in 2017.

Not only did the election see a massive collapse in electoral support for the dominant Conservative Party, it also saw a supposedly different kind of Labour Party assume office, one that under Tony Blair mapped out a ‘Third Way’ of doing politics.

But, if Blair’s New Labour government was elected in hope, and it did launch many initiatives aimed at reducing social exclusion, some see it as failing to reverse inequality, and being responsible for one of the worst foreign policy mistakes and financial disasters of modern times.

How fair are such assessments?  Experts, political figures and others who were actually there discuss the causes and the consequences of the 1997 general election, and the lessons for today that might be drawn from it.

The conference is sponsored by the Centre for British Politics in the School of Politics & International Relations at the University of Nottingham, and Policy Network.
