The Drift – opening Sat 21 September 2013

Visit our new Community Gallery exhibition The Drift, running from Saturday 21 September to Sunday 1 December.  Taking nearly twenty years to complete, this multi-layered body of work explores the harshness and dangers of coal mining in one of the last working pits in England.  A collaboration between photographer Ian Beesley, poet Ian McMillan and the miners of Hayroyd’s colliery, this striking exhibition offers a unique insight into the triumphs and disasters that befell the colliery.

Marking 50 years since Harold Wilson’s White Heat speech, join us on Tues 1 October as an actor reads the speech in its entirety.

Don’t miss your last chance to visit our current changing exhibition Hidden by photographer Red Saunders, closing on Sunday 29 September.  An Impressions Gallery touring exhibition, Hidden features re-imagined photographic tableaux, recreating great moments in the long struggle for rights and representation in Britain, featuring those often hidden from history. Take the opportunity to meet artist Red Saunders as he leads a free guided tour of the exhibition tomorrow (Friday) at 1.15pm.  Don’t miss the final free guided tour of the exhibition on Friday 27 September at 1.15pm.

It’s back.  From Thursday 10 October to Sunday 13 October, Manchester’s celebration of art and culture returns to the city for its fourth year.  As ever, it offers a weekend-long snapshot of the best the city has to offer, from Jeremy Deller at Manchester Art Gallery and Steve McQueen at IWM North to an Un-convention along the Corridor.  Vogue comes to town, Cornerhouse does Double Indemnity and Manchester District Music Archive is at The Lowry.  Join the fun at People’s History Museum and be the first to see our new changing exhibition The People’s Business on its opening weekend.
