New exhibition - On the March Family Friendly Half Term Volunteering opportunities Art Fund Prize 2011 update

New exhibition – On the March

Our new exhibition On the March - An Exhibition of Banners Made by Ed Hall is now open.  Come and see an array of striking and colourful banners made by Ed, the UK’s leading trade union and campaign banner artist.  He’s been making banners since the early 1980s and many of his banners were carried on the recent demonstrations against the cuts in London.  There were so many banners to choose from we decided to have banners on display in the entrance foyer and in the Engine Hall as well as the exhibition space.

Family Friendly Half Term

If you are visiting over May half term there are a variety of events and activities for all ages.  Living History character Bronterre O’Brien will help you discover the headlines behind Peterloo, cotton mills and the right to vote, help build a huge banner in the Engine Hall using cloths, collage and other fun techniques or use the Manchester Madness craft table to create your own Manchester-themed flags and bunting ready for the Manchester Day Parade in a few weeks time.  For little ones, our under 5s interactive story session Beeing Special follows Little Bee’s adventures.

Volunteering opportunities

The museum is hoping to expand its team of volunteers from student placements to include more gallery based, longer term participation. Details of volunteer roles and policy will be available from mid June 2011 so if you’re interested in becoming a volunteer at the museum, please send an email requesting information to lauren.hibbert@phm.org.uk

Art Fund Prize 2011 update

The museum was disappointed to find out that we were not successful in reaching the shortlist for the Art Fund Prize 2011.  We were delighted to have made the longlist and want to say thank you very much for voting for us – we received so much support that we lead the public vote from start to finish! If you love the museum as much as we do, please continue to support the work we do: Visit - come and see our fabulous new exhibition On the March Give - make a donation to the museum during your visit Support - become a supporter of the museum
