Election! Britain Votes – Learning Private View

We would like to invite you and your colleagues to our special Learning Private View of our new changing exhibition Election! on Friday 20 February, 5.30pm - 7.30pm.  Jon Snow, news and current affairs presenter, will be opening the exhibition.  Meet the Learning Team over a drink, find out how your group can explore and be inspired by Election! and meet one of our Living History characters Hannah Mitchell, who was a local working class suffragette.  Please RSVP by Friday 13 February 2015.

International Women’s Day

Celebrate by watching a free performance of The Hard Way Up – A Suffragette’s Story, based on the life of Hannah Mitchell on Sunday 8 March, 1.15pm - 2.00pm.  School and community groups can also book this performance for a small charge by contacting the Learning Team.  Find out more about women’s history on our free Women as Peacemakers City Centre Trail on Saturday 7 March, 2.00pm – 4.00pm.  Both events have been supported by a grant from Manchester City Council.

Adult groups – have your say in Election!

As well as using our amazing collections to provide a whirlwind history of voting in modern Britain, our new exhibition Election! will also connect people with the contemporary debate surrounding the 2015 general election.  Election! provides a physical space for groups to discuss and debate political views and generate their own message to share with fellow voters and politicians.  If you would be interested in getting involved, please contact Harriet Beeforth on 0161 838 9190 or email

Celebrate LGBT History Month

This February bring your class on a LGBT history tour of the PHM.  Find out how attitudes to gender and sexuality have been affected by society, politics and activism over the past 200 years and the fight for equality for LGBT people in the UK.  We’re looking for secondary schools and colleges in Greater Manchester to trial the tour and give their feedback.  If you’d like to bring your group for a FREE tour then please contact Catherine O’Donnell on 0161 838 9190 or email

Put your X where your mouth is

PHM has been working with Symmetry on a competition to design a poster to encourage people to vote on 7 May 2015.  The winning ten designs will be displayed as part of the Election! exhibition from February to June 2015 and displayed throughout Association of Greater Manchester Authorities to encourage the Greater Manchester population to take part in the political process and cast their vote on 7 May.  Limited editions of the posters will be printed by Risograph and sold to raise money for the museum.
