Description After Germany invaded Russia in June 1941, the Communist Party of Great Britain campaigned for a 'Second Front' to relieve the pressure on Russia's troops through military support from Britain, the United States and Allied forces. Rallies such as this one were held in Trafalgar Square, London in 1942. Allied landings in France on 'D-Day', 6 June 1944, opened a second front. This photograph portrays banners of (left to right): Franklin D. Roosevelt, United States President; Jawaharlal Nehru, Indian National Congress leader; Winston Churchill, British Prime Minister; Joseph Stalin, the Russian Communist Party's General Secretary and Chiang Kai-Shek, Chairman of the National Government of China.
