Banner changeover 2017
New year, new display of banners! While our Textile Conservation Team prepare for our annual banner changeover, please note Main Gallery One will be closed Monday 9 to Friday 13 January, re-opening on Saturday 14 January and Main Gallery Two will be closed from Monday 16 to Friday 20 January, re-opening on Saturday 21 January. As part of our Never Going Underground season, the banner changeover features several banners used by organisations fighting for LGBT+ rights. Join a guided tour of the new banners on display on Friday 3 February, 1.00pm – 2.00pm, including a peek behind the scenes in our Textile Conservation Studio.
Parallel Republic: The Art of Civil Disobedience
On display from Saturday 21 January to Sunday 2 April, don’t miss this fascinating exhibition of painting, illustration, photography, film, animation and music born of the Syrian uprising by some of the most active and acclaimed Syrian artists, collectives and citizen journalists including Khalil Younes, Sulafa Hijazi, Lens Young Dimashqi, Comic4Syria, Art & Freedom, Alshaab Alsori Aref Tarekh, and many more. These artist-activists have created a parallel republic where artists and activists share information and express themselves virtually, as well as on the streets.
Is your New Year’s resolution to learn something new? Discover the art of printmaking with a series of workshops and live demonstrations inspired by the stunning exhibition Dedicated to all Defenders of Human Freedoms. The Art of Paul Peter Piech, on show until Sunday 12 February. Enjoy live demonstrations of both letterpress and linocut printmaking with artists from the Regional Print Centre, or why not discover how to Print Like Paul Peter Piech with an artist from Hot Bed Press, learning how to combine text and image to create striking imagery to take away with you.
Launch Pad: Stick or Twist
For its first Launch Pad exhibition of 2017, our friends at Castlefield Gallery present Stick or Twist, curated by CG Associate Member and recent graduate Kieran Leach. The title, Stick or Twist is derived from the process of making the exhibition, whereby after making his selection of works from eight other artists, Leach gave them the option to ‘stick or twist’ – either exhibit a work chosen by Leach, or swap and include something different. He relinquished all input as curator, avoiding dialogue, and leaving himself without a say. On show from Friday 3 to Sunday 12 February.
