PHM's 1st Birthday!
Art Fund Prize 2011
Family Friendly Half Term
Visit the museum over February half term and enjoy a range of activities and events for all ages to enjoy. Discover the headlines behind Peterloo with our Living History character Bronterre O'Brien, bring your very little ones (under 5s) to our interactive story session Beeing Special and you can even try your hand at sewing your own mini sampler bookmark, taking inspiration from memorial samplers shown in our changing exhibition Death and the Working Class.
As well as all this there's the usual hands-on interactives in every gallery and don't miss our extra 1st birthday celebrations and activities (see below).
International Women's Day Manchester Quilt
Celebrate the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day and visit our exciting new Community Gallery exhibition opening on Saturday 5 March, running until Sunday 15 May. Over 300 women's stories were brought together and stitched into this eye-catching quilt. Take inspiration from your visit and create your own quilt brooch on Saturday 12 March.
Moving the Goalposts, The History of Women's Football in Britain (1895 - 2011)
Continuing the celebration of women's achievements, visit this Community Gallery exhibition opening on Monday 7 March, running alongside the International Women's Day Manchester Quilt until Sunday 15 May. Making its debut at the museum, this exhibition comments on key players, teams and landmark events through a wide range of contemporary fine art work.
Having officially opened on 5 March 2010 after just over two years closure for an amazing £12.5 million redevelopment, the new People's History Museum is almost one! From Saturday 19 February to Sunday 6 March, come and help us celebrate our first birthday in our iconic new building by taking part in some birthday themed events for all ages to enjoy. Have a go at exploring the museum with our ‘Firsts’ trail and win a limited edition prize, make a PHM party hat at our birthday craft table and try some delicious birthday cakes in The Left Bank cafe bar.
PHM in the running for Art Fund Prize 2011
The museum is delighted to be in the running for the Art Fund Prize 2011, the UK’s largest arts prize. The news was announced earlier this month by Michael Portillo, Chair of the Judges, on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row. There are ten museums that have been long listed for the prestigious £100,000 award. The prize rewards excellence and innovation in museums and galleries across the UK for a project completed or undertaken in 2010. The public can vote for their favourite museum on the list via the online poll. We are thrilled to be currently leading the poll and would really appreciate your support by voting for us! Tell the judges why you think the People's History Museum should win this Museum of the Year prize.
