  28 October 2015 - 17 January 2016, The Nippers of Salford Lads Club @ People's History Museum

The Nippers of Salford Lads Club

Opened in August 1903 as a club for working lads, Salford Lads Club is now the last surviving example of a pre World War I lads club in England.  Running from Wednesday 28 October until Sunday 17 January 2016, the exhibition focuses on the club’s remarkable collection of handwritten membership records tracing the fortunes of the 13 year old nipper boys as they progressed.  The records include famous lads Graham Nash and Alan Clark of The Hollies, footballers from Manchester United and Manchester City, boxers, rugby league players and Fred Done of bookmakers Betfred.

Make More Noise! Suffragettes in Silent Film

With a title inspired by Emmeline Pankhurst’s infamous speech, the BFI presents over 20 silent archive films combining gloriously anarchic comedies, newsreels and rarely-seen footage.  Explore PHM’s suffragette displays then visit our friends at HOME and enjoy a fascinating insight into women’s suffrage, accompanied by a specially commissioned score written and performed live by composer Lillian Henley.  This event is part of a UK wide film project, THE TIME IS NOW, celebrating women forcing change.
