July 2016 marks the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. A military coup was launched by a number of generals in the Spanish armed forces in July 1936. The eventual leader was Francisco Franco, who was to rule Spain as a dictatorship until his death in 1975. The war cost 500,000 lives over three years, plus another 500,000 people who were driven into exile.
The Item of the Month is part of the archives pamphlet collection and dates from January 1937 following the Defence of Madrid. It was published by the Young Communist League. It contains a list of the British members of the International Brigades who died in the battle for Madrid.
