August 2013 – Denis Healey – sketches taken from his meeting notes c. late 1940s
Healey celebrates his 96th birthday on 30 August.
He stood as a Labour candidate in the 1945 General Election and narrowly lost. He then took up the post as head of the International Department based in the Labour Party Headquarters from 1945 to 1951. The archive holds his papers from this period. The papers are mainly concerned with the post-war reconstruction of mainland Europe. As can be detected from his sketches of Clement Attlee and others not all the meetings he attended held his full attention!
Healey was Minister of Defence from 1964-1970 and Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1974-1979.
