Letter to George Brown from Denis Healey, 3 March 1966
The 50th anniversary of the general election held in 1966 was on 31 March 2016.
The Labour government under Harold Wilson were returned to office with a vastly increased parliamentary majority; it had been just four seats before the election, following it they had 96 seats.
The note on the right is from Denis Healey, who at the time was Minister of Defence. He had been asked to provide a rough draft of the Defence section of the manifesto. His reply is to the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party George Brown – a man whom Healey had little time for.
