Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) is one of the museum’s main funders.

Major funders for the £12.5 million redevelopment of the museum (completed in early 2010) were:

  • Manchester City Council (MCC); committed the land adjacent to the Pump House and provided assistance towards the HLF Stage I application.

  • Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF); awarded £7.18 million in November 2007 after the museum successfully completed the Stage II application process.
